Chapter seventeen
Blizzard had not been long back in his office at Abbey Road Police Station, and had just sat down at his desk with a mug of tea, when Chris Ramsey walked in.
âI hear youâve been playing nice,â he said as Blizzard gestured for him to take a seat. âThe atmosphere round this place is electric. Is it right that youâve nicked a couple of Secret Squirrels?â
âSure is.â
âDo we know why they were following you?â asked Ramsey.
âWeâre assuming that it must be something to do with Alanâs death.â Blizzard shook his head. âThe more this case unfolds, the less I think I know about the man. First Nathaniel Callaghan and now MI5. Why would either of them be interested in a sergeant from Hafton?â
âNo idea. Are the MI5 guys not saying anything?â
âTheyâre sticking to the name and number routine,â said Blizzard. âNot sure how long theyâll keep it up, though. I think that they assumed that they would be released immediately once we found out who they were but the gravity of their situation may be starting to dawn on them. Arthurâs been laying it on thick.â
âHow long can we hold them, do you think?â
âArthurâs coming under all sorts of heavy pressure from their bosses to let them go, mind, but the chief is behind him for the moment so weâre keeping them in until we get some answers. Even if we do let them go today, it wonât be until much later. Wendy Talbot and Matt Riley want to be in on the questioning and are heading back north. Suffice to say that Wendy is not impressed â they werenât that far from London when this blew up.â
âI imagine sheâs furious,â said Ramsey. âAnd I certainly wouldnât want to cross her. How did it go with Nathaniel? Did he agree that itâs a fair cop and hand himself in?â
âWhat do you think? It was not the charming version of the man that we met this morning. I think we may have got him rattled.â Blizzard noted the piece of paper in the detective inspectorâs hand. âWhatâs that?â
âSomething that may rattle him some more,â said Ramsey. He placed the document on the desk with a look of intense satisfaction on his face. âIn fact, it could be the first piece of evidence linking him with Alanâs murder.â
âReally?â Blizzard picked up the document. It was a printout out of a DVLA record. He ran his eye down the page. âWhoâs this Gary Race then?â
âWell might you ask,â said Ramsey. âWe got onto him after a delivery driver came into the front office and said heâd heard that we were appealing for information about Alanâs murder. He said that he saw a car turn off towards the wasteland behind the new Tesco at about 8.30 on the night Alan vanished.â
âThatâs not long after he left the McDonaldâs,â said Blizzard.
âExactly, and what makes it even more interesting is that the van driver jotted down the vehicleâs registration number, which confirms that itâs from Leeds.
